Mile 10,000

It is finished!

kamket 2110 - Version 2Mile 9,999

kamket 2131 - Version 2Mile 10,000

With all of the complications caused by the recent crash getting to this point has been in doubt over the past few weeks. But cycling is such a simple and beautiful sport that no matter how bad I was feeling a short ride made things better. 10 miles here, 15 miles there and the next thing you know; 10,000 miles.

All of the snow that we had recently has melted and with temperatures in the upper 40's it felt spring-like as I geared up for, what, could it be - the 330th time this year? Rolling out of the driveway is still one of life's simple pleasures and not a single ride all year has felt like a chore. And what a year it's been. It started with a New Year's Day ride with The Boss. Then a trip to Arizona with Russ and Darin. Spring training. A new bike. A few races. The Tour Challenge. The Crash. And literally hundreds of great rides in between. I've learned how my body responds to stress a little better. And I've come to know to my cycling friends a lot better. If the County Highway Department wants to know what roads are in need of repair - just ask. I've ridden them all.

I burned up 17 tires and while I like Vittoria's the best - almost any pair will do. 7 chains have bit the dust. As have 4 sets of handlebar tape, 550 packs of Powergels, 375 Powerbars, countless gallons of assorted energy drinks, 1 pair of shoes, 4 pairs of shorts, 5 pairs of gloves, 8 water bottles, 1 helmet and best of all, 185 Salted Nut Rolls. My weight? 162 pounds. Exactly what it was last January 1st. So much for cycling as a weight loss program. 10,000 miles and not one pound lost. Go figure.

But most of all I've learned that it's not about the bikes, it's not about the gear, it's not about the route or where you are; it's about the freedom of the road, the wind in your face and your cycling buddies at your side.

And before any of us think that 10,000 miles in one year is a cool goal, check out what the real hard-core guys do by reading THIS. If you're too lazy to click the link I'll tell you that the official world record is 75,065 miles in one year.
